Our Story
End Austin Homelessness was born from a simple act of connection on the streets of Austin, Texas. When Jasper Steinmetz recognized former Indiana University running back Sampson James carrying his Crimson athletic bag, he didn't just walk past. He stopped to listen.
That chance encounter revealed a stark reality: Sampson—once a standout four-star college athlete playing in packed stadiums—had spent seven months without a home, working low-wage jobs while navigating severe housing instability. His story exposed how suddenly the safety net can disappear for anyone, no matter their past accomplishments or potential.
Driven to take action, Jasper launched a grassroots campaign that mobilized former teammates, sports fans, and community members. Within days, the community raised over $17,000—providing Sampson with immediate essentials, job support, and a place to live.
That single moment transformed into a broader mission. End Austin Homelessness was founded on the belief that no one in our city should face housing insecurity alone. We move beyond generic policy to provide immediate, compassionate, and human-centered support for individuals experiencing homelessness in Austin.
